Army List + Tactics: Lumineth Realm-Lords (the first 1-1.5k points)

So today I opened my limited edition Lumineth Realm-Lords battletome and man am I impressed! I'm sure you will have seen countless reviews so we'll move on pretty quickly to the list and tactics here, but needless to say the book is fantastic and of a very high quality. But anyway, to the list(s)!

First thing's first. What Great Nation did you go for?

Well, I deliberated about this one for quite a while. I always leaned towards one of them but, in reading through the book, I kept being pulled more in various directions. As a lover of the arcane arts Zaitrec was my instant draw, but Iliatha was interesting because of the buffs to your Vanari units. I had images here of the elves of Lord of the Rings (and the music they play when the elven army comes along has been stuck in my head for days)! Despite initial bad reception, the Stoneguard have really grown on me and, as such, Ymetrica could be tempting. I have to say that, despite being very popular at the moment and undoubtedly full of useful tools, Syar never really appealed to me.

So, after reading through, it's Zaitrec for me! Why? Well, I love magic, and their fluff and abilities really capture that for me. But in terms of gameplay, what do I see myself doing differently with my Zaitrec?

Well, their +1 to cast for the first spell EACH WIZARD casts each turn will be really helpful for enhancing all the sunmetal weapons (I plan to take a lot of Vanari!) and there are some powers in the Hysh magic lore I love that will be phenomenal to get off more easily. Zaitrec will also make it easier to deny hostile spells (we're seeing increasingly strong magic armies out there like Tzeench, or resistance from Khorne etc.) and hero will know a second spell from their appropriate magic spell lore.

If you are one of those who likes named characters (not me so much) then Teclis will also boost Zaitrec in numerous ways.

The first 1k (or 1.5k, once all the goodies are included)

So with all of the above in mind, and being a huge 'fluff-bunny', I started to write a list for small-medium games. What I ended up with was a 1,500 point list (I was aiming for 1,000), so I was forced to cut out battalions to make the smaller list work. Cue sad, Scenari Cathallar tears rolling down my grief-stricken face.

TOTAL: 920 points

I could add one or two endless spells here, but this is the makings of a Vanari-based list. You can see that my general here knows an additional spell thanks to Zaitrec, and all Zaitrec Wizards know the Overwhelming Heat spell.

While this list is fluid, I have mixed a few spells amongst my units, bearing in mind all of them bar Power of Hysh can only be attempted once. There is some logic to who has what, however. All Vanari units will likely be making A LOT of use of their Power of Hysh spell, but on some occasions we'll need something else. The Wardens will be in front of the Sentinels and, as such, have Lambent Light (to cast on an enemy unit to give bonuses to Sentinel's ranged attacks) and also Solar Flare, which is a real Swiss army knife utility spell that does a lot of things at once.

The Dawnriders, being fast as they are with a 14" move, will be ahead - likely on the flanks. They could also be good contenders for Lambent Light (to mark an enemy units far out for accurate Sentinel ranged attacks to soften them up before a Dawnrider charge). One of the units also has Protection of Hysh as they are your go-to units for dealing with numbers due to their bonuses (units of 5 might be operating together!) and will be needing that 5+++ save!

My general, the Scinari Cathallar, has spells that protect nearby Vanari units or debuff the enemy at range. Total Eclipse looks to be awesome to double your opponent's command point spending. She will likely be behind / amongst my Vanari units which will either all be together or, at the very least, be operating as two Warden / Sentinel blocks. Due to the slow speed of the army (we'll all be shining companies from the start of the battle) I gave the Sentinels Speed of Hysh to cast on one of their Warden buddies in case we need to grab an objective. Overall, however, I see a lot of use of the Power of Hysh spell on my Vanari units for those all important mortals on 5+ to hit (helped by scouting Dawnriders with Lambent Light for re-rolls to hit) and this spell, usually cast on a 6, will be cast on a 5 for Zaitrec if it is the first spell that unit casts that turn.

What do you add to get your juicy 1,500 point list?

Well, the 1,500 point list is really the minimum list I comfortably want to run, but that's not always possible. Anyway, here is is with the extra goodies added in.

Summary

Well, this was a bit of a brain dump. No doubt this will change over time but it's good to get a starter list on paper. I feel the Lumineth will play as a defensive wall that moves up slowly. The Sentinels are a big deal for me and, who knows, maybe a future list would include more rather than the Stoneguard.

One thing that stood out for me as a narrative-minded player is how I like generic characters. We have a bit of a problem here as most of ours here are unique. I think what I will do is convert something to have a Scinari Cathallar that really represents me on the battlefield. Right now, I'm thinking something based on Mistweaver Saih but with some other bits / green stuff work.

As always, let me know your thoughts, if you have any questions and, of course, if you have any suggestions!
